The European Council included the UK into the list of arms suppliers Ukraine can purchase equipment from using EU’s EUR90 billion ($103 billion) loan program, the Council announced on July 22.

The decision continues an agreement between Brussels and London signed July 13 and allows Ukraine to use loan funds to purchase military equipment from British manufacturers in addition to suppliers already covered under the bloc’s framework, the European Economic Area, the European Free Trade Association, and a list of designated third countries, the council’s press office said.

“EU solidarity with Ukraine is a key priority of the Irish Presidency,” the statement quoted Irish Foreign Minister Helen McEntee.

“Today’s approval reflects the EU and the UK’s shared commitment to support Ukraine as long as it takes to bring Russia's illegal war of aggression to an end and secure a comprehensive, just and lasting peace. The UK’s participation in the Ukraine support loan will allow Ukraine to also procure from UK defense manufacturers ensuring Ukraine has the capabilities needed to protect its citizens.”

The UK was allowed to join because it meets three criteria for third-country participation under the loan rules: it pledged a “fair and proportionate” financial contribution, has a defense and security partnership with the EU, and already provides substantial support to Ukraine, the council said.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.

Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
