Kyiv mostly ready for winter season, Klitschko says

Kyiv’s
infrastructure is nearly “90% ready” for the 2026–27 heating season, Mayor
Vitali Klitschko said on Aug. 21.
“In the first place, we set ourselves the task of restoring our central heat supply,” Klitschko told Ukrainian state news agency Ukrinform.
“The restoration of the [boiler] stations and preparation for the heating season that will start — are almost 90% ready.”
He said another priority is creating a backup system to ensure heat supply if key energy facilities are destroyed by Russian missile attacks.
On Aug. 17, Klitschko said that as of midmonth about 50% of the planned work to prepare the city for winter had been completed, and only some projects were 90% or more finished.
“Last winter, during severe cold, [Russia] deliberately struck energy and heat-generation facilities,” he said at the time.
“Preparing for the heating season, our main task is to
prepare a backup system. Kyiv’s heating system is one of the largest in Europe;
it was built over decades, and it is not possible to fundamentally change it in
such a short time.”
