An air raid alert was triggered in the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv and the surrounding oblast in the afternoon on March 1 when an aerial object was detected approaching from the north.
The alert was announced at 11.32 a.m.
“An unidentified object was spotted in the sky,” the Kyiv Regional Military Administration said in a Telegram messenger post.
“The work of air defense forces and means is possible in this regard. Stay in shelters or other safe places until the alert is cancelled.”
Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv City Military Administration, said the aerial object had been detected in the skies outside Kyiv.
The alert was cancelled at 12.08 p.m.
Meanwhile, neither air defense operations nor explosions were reported or heard.
Later, Ukrainian Air Force Spokesman Yuriy Ihnat said Ukrainian air defenses had shot down an unidentified enemy drone. He said the type of drone would be established when wreckage from the shoot-down was recovered.
The preliminary assessment was that the object had been an enemy balloon.
He added that an earlier alert in the eastern oblasts of the country had been triggered by the activity of enemy tactical aviation.
