Kyiv seeks NATO invitation next week
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has urged NATO to invite Kyiv to join the alliance as soon as next week, Reuters reported on Nov. 29.
The report cites a letter from Sybiha, which outlines Ukraine’s renewed push to receive a NATO invitation, which is part of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's "victory plan."
While Ukraine understands that joining NATO is impossible while the war continues, it argues that extending an invitation now would show Russian dictator Vladimir Putin that one of his primary goals — preventing Ukraine from joining NATO — will remain out of his reach.
During the last summer summit, NATO members announced that Ukraine will become a member of the alliance and that the country is on the path to membership. However, an official invitation has not been extended, and no entry date has been set.
In his appeal to foreign ministers of NATO member states, Sybiha says that now is the right time for an invitation.
"This will be an appropriate response by the alliance to the constant escalation of the war initiated by Russia, the latest manifestation of which is the involvement of tens of thousands of North Korean troops and the use of Ukraine as a testing ground for new types of weapons,” Sybiha wrote in the letter.
“I urge you to support the decision to extend an invitation to Ukraine as one of the results of the NATO foreign ministers' meeting on Dec. 3-4, 2024.”
On Nov. 24, Bloomberg reported that the White House considered issuing a public call for an official invitation to Ukraine to join NATO but decided against it.
