Kyiv subway repairs nearly complete — Mayor Klitschko
The repairs on the tunnel section between Demiivska and Lybidska subway stations in Kyiv are almost complete, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced on Aug. 30.
Klitschko stated that engineers have completed constructing a new 27-meter section of the tunnel. In addition, adjacent sections on both sides, totaling over 50 meters in length, have been reinforced. The internal construction and assembly work in the tunnel are also complete.
The mayor said the next phase involves launching a test train, planned to run in the coming nights.
Klitschko reported that the first test train will include a special car to inspect the new tracks. Furthermore, the train will begin testing safety systems at various speeds. After this, specialists will conduct a detailed inspection of all engineering and safety systems at night before resuming regular passenger train service.
The tunnel section has been closed in December 2023 for urgent repairs, effectively cutting off six stations of Kyiv’s subway network. The tunnel walls developed cracks, through which ground water began leaking onto the tracks.
