Local residents react to Russian missile attack on 128th Brigade award ceremony

Residents of Zarichne in Zaporizhzhia Oblast where a Russian missile strike killed fighters from the 128th Brigade during an award ceremony, reported that everyone in the open during the attack lost their lives, according to Radio Svoboda on Nov. 7.
"When I arrived, I saw how many bodies there were!” said local councilman Oleksandr Panchenko.
“Everyone who was outside, in the open, was killed. You know for yourselves how many boys there were. The force of the blast was terrifying."
According to Panchenko, the explosion was caused by a high-powered fragmentation charge.
"A fragment even flew into my apartment, breaking through the window,” he added.
“If anyone had been standing there, it could have killed them."
Panchenko stated that four members of his family were injured, including his wife, her sister, and their parents, all of whom were near the house of his wife's parents when the strike occurred.
Another resident of Zarichne, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed that all the civilians injured resided on the street where the strike took place. She mentioned that the spread of fragments was extensive, with one individual sustaining injuries at a considerable distance from the point of impact.
The resident said that two four-story buildings are located near the site of the attack. Glass from apartment windows shattered, leading to injuries from the flying shards, including one woman who suffered a head wound.
Attack on the 128th Brigade’s soldiers in formation: what is known
The Russian missile struck the soldiers of the 128th Separate Mountain-Assault Zakarpattia Brigade in a frontline village in Zaporizhzhya Oblast. The exact number of casualties has not been officially confirmed.
The soldiers were killed while participating in an award ceremony at their base near the front in Zaporizhzhya Oblast.
Defense Minister Rustem Umerov has ordered an investigation into the tragedy. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the incident as “a tragedy that could have been avoided.”
