Zelenskyy, Macron discuss peacekeeping force proposals
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a phone conversation with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron to discuss the potential involvement of an international peacekeeping contingent in Ukraine.
“I spoke today with the President of France,” Zelenskyy said in a video address on Jan. 13.
“It was quite a long and detailed conversation. We discussed defense support, including various forms and arms packages for Ukraine.”
The presidents also talked about investments in the procurement of ammunition for Ukraine, the issue of deploying international peacekeeping contingents, and the training of Ukrainian troops.
“And, of course, the global situation; we coordinated our positions,” Zelenskyy added.
Discussions about sending troops to Ukraine resumed in November 2024, following Donald Trump’s election victory.
On Dec. 3, 2024, RFE/RL, citing an unnamed high-ranking NATO official, reported that France and the United Kingdom are discussing possible security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of peace talks with Russia. One option includes deploying troops from both countries along the demarcation line to enforce a potential ceasefire.
According to Reuters, European Union countries may send up to 100,000 troops to Ukraine for a peacekeeping mission if a ceasefire is reached.
