French President Emmanuel Macron has changed his stance after declaring in June 2022 that humiliating Russia is unacceptable, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Feb. 8.

“After all, it was Macron who paved the way for the supply of tanks, and he also supported Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union,” Zelenskyy said in an interview with the French daily newspaper Le Figaro.

“I think it was a real signal.”

In June 2022, Macron announced that it is important not to humiliate Russia, adding that Russia needs to be part of Europe’s future security infrastructure. His statement was widely criticized by Ukrainian politicians at the time.
