Fire at IRIS-T producer Diehl Metall in Berlin involves dangerous chemicals
A severe fire broke out at the Diehl Metall steel plant in Berlin, leading to warnings about toxic smoke due to dangerous chemicals stored on site, including sulfuric acid and copper cyanide. The blaze was first reported by German news outlet Bild on May 3, citing local firefighting teams.
According to Berlin's rescue service, four floors of the building have been completely destroyed, with part of the structure already collapsed. Officials are urging residents to steer clear of the area to avoid exposure to the hazardous fumes.
Berliner Zeitung reported that the fire originated on the morning of May 3 on the first floor of the plant and quickly spread to higher levels. The presence of chemicals necessitated firefighting efforts from outside the building only. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.
DW noted that the incident occurred at the Diehl Metall facility in Berlin. It's important to clarify that Diehl Defense, which manufactures defense products such as the IRIS-T air defense systems, operates out of southern Germany and is not affected by this incident.
