Russia launched one of its largest drone attacks against Ukraine right after SpaceX started throttling Starlink devices used by the Ukrainian military, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Oct. 14.

The satellite internet system is critical to the operation of Ukrainian drone interceptors, according to the president. Currently visiting London, Zelenskyy also said he had briefed UK PM Andy Burnham in detail about “Russian attacks on our cities,” as well as attacks targeting civilians and critical infrastructure.

“Waves of drone attacks continued throughout the day and night,” the president said in a Telegram post.

“Russia launched 124 drones overnight and another 145 during the day. More than 40 Shaheds are still in our skies. The energy sector, logistics, and railways are under attack. A significant number of drones were shot down, but there were also hits.”

Zelenskyy described his meeting with Burnham as productive and said he valued the partnership between Ukraine and Britain.

“That is why it is especially important now to strengthen air defenses and provide Ukraine with everything necessary to protect lives,” he added.

“Today, decisions were made to accelerate the delivery of British air defense equipment to Ukraine to counter jet-powered Shahed drones. I am very grateful for this timely and necessary assistance. Thank you, Andy, the people of Britain, the government and His Majesty for their solidarity and support for our country during this brutal Russian war.”

Earlier on Oct. 14, Ukrainian defense officials said that, without warning, Starlink connectivity started being throttled for any devices moving faster than 160 kilometers per hour over Ukrainian territory. According to them, the abrupt throttling has disrupted several in-progress military missions.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
