Transnistria-Russia appeal rumors debunked by HUR

25 February 2024, 02:55 PM

The claim that MPs from unrecognized Transnistria plan to appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Feb. 28 congress to join the Russian Federation has been debunked by Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) on Feb. 25.

The dissemination of information about purported intentions “bears all the signs of a deliberately disinformation campaign aimed at destabilizing the situation in the region,” the HUR said.

On Feb. 22, messages began to spread on the Internet that “MPs” of all levels during the congress on Feb. 28 in the capital of the unrecognized Transnistria may appeal to Russia with a request to “accept Transnistria into the Russian Federation.” In particular, this was stated by local oppositionist and activist Gennady Chorba.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is set to address the Federal Assembly in Moscow on Feb. 29 and could potentially announce his acceptance of the “MPs’’ request, Chorba said.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in one of its February summaries reported that the Kremlin is conducting information operations against Moldova, very similar to those Moscow used before the invasion of Ukraine in 2014 and 2022.

On Jan. 15, Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that in the spring of 2024, Russia would try again to destabilize the situation in the country.

In February 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian intelligence intercepted a Russian plan to destabilize the political situation in Moldova.
