Mongolia helps Putin ‘evade justice’ — Ukraine
By refusing to arrest Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, the Mongolian government “has effectively allowed” the Russian leader to “evade justice, thereby sharing responsibility for his war crimes,” Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Sept. 2.
“The Mongolian government's failure to execute the binding ICC arrest warrant for Putin is a significant blow to the International Criminal Court and the international criminal justice system,” ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi said.
According to Tykhiy, Mongolia has essentially facilitated the escape of an accused war criminal from justice, thus sharing responsibility for his actions.
“We will work with partners to ensure there are consequences for Ulaanbaatar,” the statement added.
Earlier on Sept. 2, Putin arrived in Mongolia for an official visit.
Since 2000, Mongolia has been a participant in the International Criminal Court and ratified the Rome Statute in 2003. Therefore, the country is obligated to comply with ICC judgements, including the arrest warrant for Putin issued on March 17, 2023.
