MP denies conflict between SBU and HUR

There is no long-standing conflict
between Ukraine’s SBU security service and Defense Intelligence (HUR), parliamentary
Defense Committee chair Roman Kostenko told NV on Sept. 8.
Kostenko was commenting on a recent a shooting in Kyiv between officers of the two agencies.
“Our committee spoke with [SBU head Oleksandr] Poklad and [HUR chief Oleh] Ivashchenko,” Kostenko said.
“There is no standoff between the intelligence services. At the level of the special services, it genuinely does not exist — I can officially state that. They communicate normally. We questioned them normally, and both understand what happened.”
He said the recent shootout in Kyiv was “a situation that arose as a result of actions at the scene,” adding that “the guys were trying to help each other according to their traditions of camaraderie.”
“It is a situation that definitely needs to be investigated and must never happen again,” Kostenko added.
“But this was not a blood feud or a conflict that would last forever.”
Reports of gunfire emerged overnight and on the morning of Sept.
2 in Kyiv’s Berezniaky residential district. Traffic was blocked on Yuriia
Shumskoho Street, while Ukrainian media reported a confrontation involving SBU
and HUR personnel.
