MP expelled from ruling party after bribery charges
Ukrainian MP Mykola Zadorozhnyi has been expelled from the ruling Servant of the People party after being charged with demanding a $92,000 bribe from local Sumy Oblast officials, the party announced on July 15.
The decision was made following a meeting of the party's disciplinary committee.
The party's spokesperson, Yulia Paliychuk, stated that the party supports a "full and objective investigation" into Zadorozhnyi’s conduct.
“Our [parliamentary] party condemns all forms of corruption and believes that anyone who engages in such activities must be held accountable, regardless of their status or position,” Paliychuk wrote in a Telegram post.
She added that Zadorozhnyi’s membership is suspended during the investigation. He will also be removed from the temporary parliamentary investigative committee he chaired since May.
“If his guilt is proven, he must be held accountable in accordance with the law,” Paliychuk added.
“Zero tolerance for corruption has been and remains our key position.”
Earlier on July 15, the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) charged Zadorozhnyi with demanding a $92,000 bribe in exchange for facilitating an infrastructure project in Sumy Oblast.
