Misinformation category in X report tool makes an exit, leaving users unable to report election misinformation
A recent change to user-reporting process on Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) social medium appears to have left users unable to report misinformation – including content that might influence the results of elections.
Some content that violates the social medium’s own rules might now go through an inadequate review process and not be labelled or removed, digital technology protection group Reset Australia has said.
Reset Australia noted the removal of the feature among several other changes in an open letter to X on Sept. 26, in which it expressed concern about the potential impact of the move weeks away from a major referendum in Australia.
The recent change means users any longer have an option to report misinformation. Users are offered categories such as hate speech, abuse, spam, imitation etc, but the "misinformation" category has disappeared from the list.
Previously, anyone could report "misinformation" in a post simply using the "report" tool that accompanies each post.
Five separate individuals across Australia have recently reported that they have been unable to report electoral misinformation. Reset Australia believes this change occurred in the last week or two. The reason for the change is unclear, it says.
The tool is still available on X's archive page, but, if a complaint is filed in this manner, it is unlikely that the company will respond, Reset Australia believes.
