NABU charges five in $400,000 UZ corruption scheme
Five current and former employees of Ukrainian Railways (UZ) have been charged with embezzling company funds, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) announced via Telegram on June 25.
According to the investigation, a former director of a department at UZ formed the criminal group and between April 2021 and February 2022, ensured that pre-determined companies “won” contracts for repairing railway equipment.
“However, the repairs were never actually conducted,” the agency said.
“Members of the organized group forged documents to falsely indicate that the work was completed by several fictitious enterprises. As a result, UZ suffered losses amounting to UAH 17.1 million ($418,000),” the statement read.
NABU and Ukraine’s SBU security service have charged five members of the group, and the group's leader has been detained.
