NASA elicits criticism after airing solar eclipse map depicting Crimea as Russian

NASA sparked widespread outrage during its live broadcast of the total solar eclipse on August 12 after displaying a map that visually depicted the occupied Crimean peninsula as part of Russian territory.
NASA broadcasted the event live as a total solar eclipse became visible across Greenland, Iceland, northern and central Spain, and parts of Portugal on August 12.
The broadcast graphics included a map of Europe that featured a border separating Crimea from mainland Ukraine, while omitting any boundary between the peninsula and Russia.
The Polish entertainment show The Floor featured a map of Ukraine omitting occupied Crimea during a late November 2025 broadcast on TVN, as participants guessed country names based on on-screen images.
The on-screen graphics highlighted mainland Ukraine in red while depicting the Crimean peninsula in orange.
