NATO showcases Ukrainian pilot training — video
NATO released a short video giving a glimpse into the process of training Ukrainian pilots to fly F-16 fighter jets.
The Alliance's press service published it via Twitter on Aug. 6.
The footage included comments from one Ukrainian military pilot, who said that flying the F-16 is very exciting, although he doesn’t necessarily consider Soviet-era MiG jets “dull.” According to him, the F-16 is very responsive and easy to control.
Danish Air Force Major General Jan Dam noted that although the F-16 jets were first produced decades ago, the airframe has received several revisions and upgrades, keep them on par with modern aircraft.
"Now it is a very modern aircraft, comparable to the best Western fighters," he said.
Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Norway have pledged to provide Ukraine with several dozens of F-16 aircraft.
On July 31, Bloomberg reported that, more than year since the initial announcement, Ukraine has received its first batch of F-16 jets.
According to The Times, the first six F-16 jets were delivered to Ukraine from the Netherlands. Sources from The Times also clarified that a few more fighters are expected soon from Denmark.
The Telegraph later reported that Ukrainian pilots have already conducted their first combat sorties in Ukraine on the new jets. According to the British newspaper, the planes have been used so far as additional air defense tools to protect against Russian missile and drone strikes.
