Navalny goes missing from penal colony, US expresses concerns — BBC
Imprisoned Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny has been removed from the penal colony where he was held, and his current whereabouts are unknown, the BBC reported on Dec.11.
The White House stated that they are “deeply concerned” about these reports.
The Melekhovo penal colony confirmed that he is no longer registered there, Navalny's spokesperson, Kira Yarmysh, wrote on social media.
Navalny's associates expected that he would be transferred to a stricter detention center following the extension of his prison term.
His disappearance could be linked to recent announcements about presidential elections in Russia. Russian dictator Vladimir Putin announced his intention to run for re-election in March next year.
Navalny was absent from several recent court hearings, where he previously appeared via video link. The colony's administration attributed his absence to “technical malfunctions” at the facility.
