No concrete plan yet to deploy Western troops to Ukraine — Berlin
Germany could play a role in enforcing a future ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine, although the specifics of a potential peacekeeping mission remain unclear, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on Dec. 17.
Pistorius emphasized that it is "still too early" to make decisions about a German troop presence in Ukraine, as there are currently no negotiations or ceasefire in place.
“If there is a ceasefire, then of course the Western community, NATO partners, potentially the United Nations and the European Union will have to discuss how such a peace, such a ceasefire can be secured,” Reuters quoted the minister.
“And it is obvious that Germany as Europe's biggest economy would play a role there.”
He also noted that both Ukraine and Russia would need to approve a mandate for peacekeepers.
“From my response you can tell that there are far more questions than answers right now,” Pistorius added.
“And that's why I cannot give you a conclusive answer.”
