Norway tightens asylum rules for Ukrainian men ages 18 to 60

Male Ukrainian refugees ages 18 to 60 will no longer be
eligible for collective protection and must apply for asylum individually, the Norwegian
government said
on March 27.
Under the change, men in that age range lose the right to residence in Norway based on group membership, previously granted because they were Ukrainians fleeing the Russo–Ukrainian war, and must now have their cases considered on individual asylum grounds.
Justice Minister Astri Aas-Hansen said Norway has taken in more Ukrainians than any other Scandinavian country and that municipalities are reporting strain on services and a shortage of housing. "That is why we are tightening requirements," she said.
The change applies only to new applicants and does not
affect people who already have collective protection. Exceptions will be made
for minors, men older than 60, people medically or otherwise unfit for military
service, those evacuated under medical programs, and those who are primary
caregivers for children in Norway.
