Norway to help pay for Chornobyl repairs

The Norwegian government will provide NOK100 million ($10.5
million) to repair the protective structure above the Chornobyl
Nuclear Power Plant that was damaged in a Russian attack in February 2025,
the Norwegian embassy in Kyiv said on June 11.
State Secretary at the Norwegian Foreign Ministry Eivind Vad Petersson announced the support during a visit to Kyiv, saying the funding is aimed at strengthening nuclear safety.
He noted that on June 7 a Russian drone struck the building that houses the centralized storage of spent nuclear fuel at Chornobyl.
"This attack is a reminder that Russia’s war threatens not only Ukraine’s critical infrastructure but the safety of Europe and the world," Petersson said. He added Norway will do everything possible to reduce the risk of radioactive releases and ensure the safe operation of the Chornobyl plant.
The funding will be channeled through the European Bank for
Reconstruction and Development’s International Chornobyl Cooperation Account
(ICCA) and will be used to restore the plant’s safety systems.
