Orban, Zelenskyy plan to meet next week
Hungarian PM Viktor Orban might meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as early as next week in an effort to improve relations under pressure from the European Union, NV’s sister publication European Pravda reported on June 28.
According to the report, Orban indicated this potential meeting during the EU summit in Brussels on June 27. The PM is thereby signaling a change in his stance toward Ukraine. Orban's political director announced a forthcoming meeting with Zelenskyy.
The official occasion for talks is provided by Hungary’s upcoming presidency of the European Council, commencing on July 1.
"I have personally said several times that Orban should visit Ukraine and finally talk to Zelenskyy; I hope this happens," said one European Council member.
Orban is reportedly under pressure from partners who have urged him to resolve his prolonged public conflict with Ukraine. Notably, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have been convincing Orban to try and resolve the tensions, largely revolving around the issue of Hungarian ethic minority in western Ukraine.
