Macron: Trump’s tough talk could pressure Putin into peace
French President Emmanuel Macron believes that U.S. President Donald Trump can “resume a useful dialogue” with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, Deutsche Welle reported on Feb. 18.
Macron suggests that Trump's use of “very strong language” and creating uncertainty can put pressure on Putin, which is seen as a “form of strategic ambiguity.”
Macron also expressed his willingness to speak with Putin "whenever it is appropriate during the upcoming round of talks," and confirmed that a second meeting on Ukraine and European security will take place in Paris after the negotiations between U.S. and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia.
"Everyone is concerned that a ceasefire in Ukraine will not resolve the conflict. Only a full and comprehensive peace with security guarantees, conditions of social, economic and political stability in Ukraine will eventually ensure this," he said, adding that the second emergency summit in Paris will include not only European countries but also other participants.
On Feb. 18, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States and Russia had agreed on four key principles during talks in Saudi Arabia.
