The Peace Light of Bethlehem arrived in Ukraine on Dec. 11, the State Border Guard Service reported on the Telegram messenger.
The flame, which is lit at the birthplace of Jesus Christ, started its journey through Ukraine from the west.
“Slovak scouts handed it over to their Ukrainian colleagues at the Malyi Bereznyi-Ubľa international border crossing,” the border guards said.
“Then the flame will be carried throughout Ukraine. And our military chaplain will make sure that it (comes to) all border units.”
The icon lamp, symbolizing peace and love, has already reached the capital city of Kyiv, where it was met by the primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Epiphanius.
Everyone can light their candles from the vestal fire at St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery in Kyiv.
The tradition of passing the Peace Light of Bethlehem was launched by Austrian scouts back in 1987. Since then, it has been passed around the world every year in the run-up to Christmas.
