Pentagon clarifies path forward on $6 billion in Ukraine aid
The U.S. Department of Defense plans to use the remaining
funds for aid to Ukraine by the end of Sept., according to Pentagon
spokesperson Sabrina Singh, as reported
by Voice of America.
“As you know, we have been working very hard with Congress
to secure this additional amount and allocate it to Ukraine through the PDA and
USAI packages,” Singh said.
While Singh did not comment on the fate of the remaining
funds, she emphasized that Washington is announcing aid packages for Kyiv “almost
weekly.”
“We continue to do this regularly. I have no doubt that we
will use everything we have to ensure Ukraine receives all it needs, both in
the short and long term,” the official explained.
The U.S. plans to use the remaining funds “in any way
possible,” Singh concluded.
On Sept. 5, Voice of America reported that U.S. public
organizations urged the government not to miss the opportunity to allocate the
remaining $6.2 billion available under presidential authority before the fiscal
year ends on Sept. 30.
Later, Reuters, citing its own sources, reported that U.S.
President Joe Biden’s administration is in urgent negotiations with Congress to
get approval for using $6 billion for military aid to Ukraine.
Sources claim that the State Department hopes to add the
extension of presidential authority for weapons supplies to a short-term
emergency spending bill that the Senate and House of Representatives are
expected to pass this month to avoid a government shutdown on Sept. 30.
