PM Koretskyi urges Kyiv to refine new air raid alerts as public transit seizes up

Ukrainian Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi held an emergency
meeting Monday evening, Sept. 7, with Cabinet ministers and Kyiv officials over
a public
transit crisis in the capital.
In a post on his Telegram channel, Koretskyi said he had ordered officials to immediately ensure that the metro operates in accordance with government decisions “so people can get home normally.” He stressed that “there are no grounds — and there can be no grounds — for delaying this.”
“Traffic jams, lines, and crowds at public transportation stops do not make the situation safer or more comfortable,” he wrote.
The prime minister added that the decisions must be implemented quickly, taking into account the situation in the city. He said he expected an immediate response from Kyiv authorities.
Earlier, local Telegram channels reported that another transit crisis had emerged in Kyiv during an air raid alert on the evening of Sept. 7. Large crowds reportedly gathered near Zvirynets metro station, where people were unable to board overcrowded public transportation.
Since Sept. 6, Kyiv has used a differentiated warning system for air threats, in line with a Cabinet decision. Residents now receive alerts for a yellow threat level, indicating a drone danger, and a red threat level, which may signal a mass drone attack, a missile attack or a combined missile and drone attack.
At around 8:00 p.m. on Sept. 7, however, a red-level air
raid alert was issued for Kyiv, indicating incoming enemy cruise missiles
targeting the capital. It seems the alert went live much sooner than intended —
when Russian strategic bombers took off from their airfields, still hours away
from launching missiles at Ukrainian cities.
