Poland continues building fortifications on Belarus border
Poland is further fortifying its border with Belarus, constructing bunkers and digging trenches, Poland's Minister of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said on May 9, according to Polish radio station Radio ZET.
The country is thus "comprehensively" strengthening its border, Kosiniak-Kamysz said.
"We are repairing and reinforcing the embankment. There is a military group in the Podlasiu Voivodeship. In the Lubelskim, Mazowieckim, Warmińsko-Mazurskim Voivodeships, there is a presence of army and allied forces."
Polish authorities have intensified measures to strengthen the border several times since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Polish border guards were fired upon from the Belarusian side on June 14, 2023, prompting Warsaw to increase its defenses in the area.
Poland reinforced its borders again due to the construction of the "Khrenin Line", a defensive structure made up of tank traps and trenches on the Ukraine-Belarus border.
The Polish government announced the completion of work on creating a defensive line with the Russian Kaliningrad Oblast on June 26, 2023.
Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko discussed the possibility of an attack on the Suwałki Corridor — a stretch between Russian Kaliningrad Oblast and Belarus, which belongs to Lithuania and Poland — during a meeting with Belarusian military leadership on March 26.
