Pole involved in plot against Zelenskyy faces up to 8 years in prison
Polish citizen identified as Pawel K., who helped plan an assassination attempt on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last year, has been charged and could end up in prison, Polish outlet Rzeczpospolita reported on May 20.
Polish prosecutors maintain that Pawel K. agreed to work with Russian military intelligence and contacted Russians actively fighting against Ukraine. His task was to relay information on the security system at Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport—information that could have been exploited in planning an attack on Zelenskyy.
Ukrainian prosecutors alerted Polish law enforcement about Pawel K.’s suspicious actions. Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), the Polish prosecutor’s office, and Poland’s Internal Security Agency were all involved in the investigation.
Polish authorities said their joint efforts have yielded sufficient evidence and clarified key aspects of the case. Pawel K. faces charges for being prepared to cooperate with foreign intelligence against Poland’s interests. If convicted, he could receive a sentence of up to eight years in prison.
In April 2024, the SBU said that a Russian agent operating in Poland had offered to carry out an assassination attempt on Zelensky during his visit to Warsaw on behalf of Moscow.
