School shooter in Prague may have murdered his own father, say police
The father of a school shooter in Prague was found dead in a village prior to the shooter’s attack on a Prague university, Czech law enforcement reported on Dec. 21.
“The shooter went to Prague, saying he wanted to commit suicide,” Prague police chief Martin Vondrasek said, suggesting that the shooter had killed his father. He clarified that police had been searching for the shooter even prior to the mass shooting in order to investigate the father’s death.
Vondrasek added that the shooter had “a huge arsenal of weapons and ammunition,” and that prompt police action prevented much more serious bloodshed.
The police chief also updated the death toll from the shooting, totaling 14 fatalities and 25 injuries, with 10 in serious condition. Originally, reporting on the shooting suggested there had been fifteen fatalities.
All victims were killed inside the building of Charles University, according to Vondrasek. At least some of them were classmates of the attacker, according to French news channel France 24.
The Czech government declared Dec. 23
to be a day of national mourning, with
flags at official buildings flown at half-mast, and citizens were asked to
honor the memory of the deceased with a minute of silence at noon.
