Putin tours Kursk Oblast, claims full control despite Ukrainian military presence
Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Kursk Oblast on May 21, for the first time since Russia claimed to have recaptured the entire region, holding a meeting in the town of Kurchatov, according to Russian propaganda media.
However, Andriy Kovalenko, head of the National Security and Defense Council's Center for Countering Disinformation, stresses that Russia does not fully control Kursk Oblast.
Putin also visited the under-construction Kursk NPP-2, near the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, about 60 kilometers from Ukraine’s border.
The dictator acknowledged Ukrainian forces “trying to move” toward Russia’s border in Kursk Oblast.
On April 26, Russian General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov claimed the last Kursk Oblast settlement, Gornal, was “liberated,” but Ukraine’s General Staff denied combat had ceased in the region.
The DeepState monitoring group also confirmed on May 18 that Ukraine’s operation in Kursk Oblast continues, with the General Staff noting sustained Ukrainian presence in the region.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
