Putin meeting could be ‘decisive’ for ceasefire—Zelenskyy

An in-person meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr
Zelenskyy and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin could be “decisive” in reaching a
workable
ceasefire agreement, Zelenskyy said on Feb. 20.
“We believe real opportunities to end the war honorably remain, and the world’s ability to pressure the aggressor can significantly help bring a reliable peace to replace war,” Zelenskyy told reporters after getting briefed by the Ukrainian delegation returning from the Geneva round of trilateral Ukraine–U.S.–Russia talks.
Zelenskyy said he expects another round of talks to be help soon, in February, and hopes it will be productive.
“Ukraine’s answers to the most difficult questions ahead of the next meeting are ready,” he added.
“Priorities for our negotiating team for the next meeting in a trilateral format, with the United States, have been set.”
He said Ukraine is also pushing for a Zelenskyy–Putin summit to resolve key political issues that have not been settled at the lower level.
“A leaders’ format can be decisive in many respects, and Kyiv is ready for it,” the president stated.
He praised the U.S. mediators for “doing everything to make the negotiations constructive.” Zelenskyy noted that European countries are working to help end the war and that Europe’s role in the peace process must grow.
“We will coordinate with partners; Ukraine always defends
our shared European interests,” he said.
