Modi snubs Putin’s May 9 war parade
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not come to Moscow for the May 9 Victory Day celebrations marking the end of World War II in Europe, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on April 30, according to the TASS propaganda agency.
India will be represented at the event “at a different level,” he said, stressing that the Chinese leader Xi Jinping's plans to attend the Soviet-style military parade on Red Square remain unchanged.
It was previously reported that the Israeli ambassador to Russia would attend the May 9 parade, along with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico.
On April 15, The Telegraph reported that Serbia could be barred from joining the European Union if President Aleksandar Vucic attends the May 9 military parade in Moscow.
"What has been made very clear by various member states is that any participation in the May 9 celebrations in Moscow will not be supported by the European side, given that Russia is waging a full-scale war in Europe," said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, warning other EU member governments against sending delegations to the event.
Earlier, Politico reported that Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha had invited high-ranking European officials to Kyiv on May 9 (Europe Day), aiming to display diplomatic unity and strength against Russia as Moscow prepares for its annual Victory Day parade.
