Putin to skip BRICS summit in Brazil
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will skip the BRICS summit scheduled for July 6–7 in Brazil, likely due to the outstanding arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov made the corresponding announcement on June 25.
According to Ushakov, Putin will participate in the summit via video link, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will attend in person.
On March 17, 2023, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Putin and Lvova-Belova accusing them of illegally abducting children from Ukraine to Russia since Feb. 24, 2022. Brazil ratified the Rome Statute in 2002, meaning it's legally bound to enforce warrants issued by the ICC.
On Oct. 24, 2024, the ICC said that Mongolian government has breached the Rome Statute when it chose not to arrest Russian dictator Vladimir Putin during his visit in September that year.
