The Ukrainian parliament (Verkhovna
Rada) will have to pass 32 bills in short order to prevent Kyiv losing $29.5
billion in foreign financing, including 12 bills that need to be adopted before
Oct. 14, several MPs told NV on Oct. 12.
The money is already included in the country’s budget for
this year.
According to information obtained by NV, lawmakers currently
have 32 bills identified as priorities for fulfilling Ukraine’s international
commitments. Twelve must be passed by Oct. 14, including the most controversial
measure: imposing value-added tax on international parcels worth up to EUR150 ($165).
The deadline for the remaining 20 bills is the end of
October or November. However, Parliament has not yet even considered all of the
bills scheduled for that period in their first reading.

Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
