In the wake of another Russian attack on the Ukrainian power
grid, 140,000 households in Chernihiv Oblast are without power, with rolling blackout
schedules introduced across much of the country, Deputy Energy Minister Artem
Nekrasov told Ukrainian TV broadcasters on Oct. 22.
“In Chernihiv Oblast, several energy facilities were hit again, leaving about 140,000 consumers without electricity,” said Nekrasov.
“Unfortunately, repair efforts are hindered by continuous Russian drone attacks.”
Nekrasov also noted that Sumy Oblast faces significant power outages due to sustained enemy air strikes.
"In both regions, the execution of emergency repair work is complicated by their proximity to the Russian border," he added.
On the night of Oct. 22, Russia launched a mix of missiles and kamikaze drones aimed at Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The Ukrainian military reported that 349 incoming targets were neutralized. Nevertheless, the inflicted damage prompted emergency blackouts in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts.
Later the same day, power grid operator Ukrenergo announced rolling blackout schedules going into effect at 4:00 p.m. and continued into Oct. 23.
