Romanian MEP who threatened Zelenskyy faces psychiatric exam

Romanian member of the European Parliament and far-right
S.O.S. Romania leader Diana Iovanovici-Șoșoacă has been summoned to the General
Prosecutor’s Office so prosecutors can seek her consent to subject her to a
psychiatric evaluation, Digi24
reported.
The move follows a series of criminal allegations against Șoșoacă,
including promoting extremist ideas, Holocaust denial and glorifying convicted
war criminals. It also comes after she threatened in Moscow on Oct. 19 to
“break” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s legs if he ever came to speak
in the Romanian Parliament.
In February 2025, the Institute for the Investigation of
Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile filed a complaint with
prosecutors accusing her of praising communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.
During a speech in the European Parliament, she urged colleagues to base
foreign policy on the “incredible” Ceausescu.
In September 2025, Romanian prosecutors asked the European
Parliament to lift Șoșoacă’s immunity. At the time, she was already suspected
of committing 11 crimes.
The allegations included unlawful deprivation of liberty,
publicly glorifying people convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity and
war crimes, as well as promoting fascist, legionary, racist or xenophobic
ideas, denying the Holocaust, spreading antisemitism and insulting public
officials.
It is within the case tied to legionary propaganda
allegations that prosecutors want Șoșoacă to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
But because her consent is required to begin the procedure, she was summoned to
the General Prosecutor’s Office.
The MEP criticized the authorities’ attempt to have her
examined, calling it “Soviet-style” and “punitive psychiatry.”
“They are sending me for a psychiatric evaluation — this
General Prosecutor’s Office body, full of traitors, uneducated and incompetent
people who take political orders, should not be conducting evaluations but
should itself go for psychiatric treatment. If they want Soviet-style methods,
then let them have them. Go to psychiatry yourselves before demanding that of
others,” Șoșoacă said.
On Oct. 19, speaking in Moscow at a meeting with
participants in the International Association of Friends of Russia, Șoșoacă
threatened Zelenskyy.
“If he, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, dares come to my parliament, I
will break his legs! He should not dare deliver a speech in my parliament. Why
do I call it ‘my parliament’? Because Romania’s constitution says that we, the
parliamentarians, are representatives of the Romanian people, the only ones who
can represent the sovereignty of the Romanian people. I am obligated before
Romanians to defend the sovereignty and independence of my country and react to
the enemies of my people,” Șoșoacă said.
Who is Diana Șoșoacă?
In March 2025, Ukraine’s SBU Security Service banned Diana Șoșoacă
from entering Ukraine for three years. Earlier, the Romanian politician said
she had written to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and asked him, among other
things, to “return” Ukrainian territories to Romania. She also called for
restoring diplomatic and economic relations between Romania and Russia.
In March 2023, Șoșoacă submitted a bill proposing that
Bucharest denounce its treaty on good-neighborly relations and cooperation with
Kyiv and annex territories she considers “historically” Romanian — Northern
Bukovina, Herta, Budjak (Bolhrad, Izmail), the historical Maramures region and
Snake Island.
Șoșoacă has also supported Russia’s war against Ukraine and
questioned Ukraine’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
