Russia “concerned” by “unexplained” explosions in Mariupol, reports UK intelligence

Russian sources have reported at least 14 explosions in occupied Mariupol since Feb. 21 and Russia is likely concerned about this, the UK’s Ministry of Defense wrote in its latest summary of the on-going full-scale Russian war against Ukraine on Twitter on Feb. 27.
The MoD stated that strikes were recorded on the ammunition warehouse at the Mariupol airport, on two fuel warehouses, and at a metallurgical plant which Russia uses as a military base.
Since Feb. 21, 2023, pro-Russian officials have reported at least 14 explosions around the Russian-occupied city of Mariupol.
Intelligence reminds that Mariupol is at a distance of at least 80 km from the front line.
“Russia will likely be concerned that unexplained explosions are occurring in a zone it had probably previously assessed as beyond the range of routine Ukrainian strike capabilities,” the report said.
The ministry noted that “although widely devastated earlier in the war, Mariupol is important to Russia because it is the largest city Russia captured in 2022 that it still controls, and sits on a key logistics route.”
Mariupol mayoral advisor Petro Andryushchenko reported several explosions in Mariupol on Feb. 23. The day before, he said that the Armed Forces destroyed two fuel warehouses in Mariupol. Mariupol City Hall also reported Ukrainian strikes against an enemy ammo dump in the area of Mariupol’s seaport.
