Emergency systems engage as Kharkiv nuclear facility loses power in Russian attack
As a result of Russia's strike on Kharkiv on April 4, the neutron source nuclear subcritical facility lost its external power supply, according to the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU).
Despite the loss of external power during the assault, emergency systems kicked in, and the radiation levels at the facility have remained normal.
This facility, vital for research across various scientific disciplines and medical radioisotope production, experienced the power cut at 8:30 a.m. due to the offensive. However, the activation of emergency diesel generators ensured operational stability.
The broader attack on Kharkiv involved Shahed drones, resulting in significant casualties and damage. Four individuals lost their lives, and 12 were injured, with residential buildings bearing the brunt of the assault. Out of 20 drones deployed in the strike, Ukrainian forces successfully neutralized 11, showcasing their defensive resilience amidst ongoing hostilities.
The neutron source is intended for scientific and applied research in nuclear physics, radiation materials science, biology, chemistry, as well as for the production of medical radioisotopes.
