Russia’s first use of FAB-3000 guided bomb — video
Russia claims to have used a three-ton FAB-3000 M-54 bomb equipped with a guidance wing kit for the first time, dropping it on Lyptsi, Kharkiv Oblast, as seen in footage circulating online.
Russian propaganda said it was "the first combat use in the history of mankind of a bomb of this caliber with a guidance kit."
Although the propaganda claimed it was dropped on a site where Ukrainian troops were deployed, the munition narrowly missed a hospital in the town, according to Ukrainian outlet Defense Express.
While the bomb did not hit the building directly, its massive explosive payload and descent control offered by the wing kit still make it a powerful tool in the Russian arsenal.
Defense Express specified that the FAB-3000 M-54 is 3.3 meters long and has a diameter (at the stabilizer) of 1 meter. Its total weight is 3,067 kg, with about 1,200 kg being explosive material.
"Therefore, considering this, a miss by the bomb even by several dozen meters is less significant compared to the FAB-250 or FAB-500," the outlet said.
In March 2024, Russia first announced it had resumed the production of FAB-3000 bombs.
