Explosions rock key oil hub in central Russia

A series of at least 10 powerful explosions shook the Russian city of Ryazan overnight, the Exilenova+ Telegram channel reported early on Nov. 20, posting eyewitnesses’ photos and videos.
Rosneft’s oil refinery, one of the largest in the country, was reportedly attacked by drones. The plant plays a key role in supplying fuel to Russian forces and their logistics network.
Regional Governor Pavel Malkov confirmed the attack, claiming that debris from an intercepted drone caused a fire at “one enterprise,” though he did not name the facility. Emergency services were deployed to the scene.
This is the second attack on the refinery in a week. The previous attack on Nov. 15, forced the plant to suspend crude processing operations. The refinery also suspended sales of petroleum products on the St. Petersburg International Commodity Exchange.
The Ryazan refinery, operated by the Rosneft oil company, is one of Russia’s four largest, with an annual capacity of about 17.1 million tons. Since January, it has been hit six times and reduced its refining capacity by about half in August.
