The Russian military has attacked the town of Slovyansk, near Donetsk, with long-range artillery, the city’s mayor, Vadym Liakh, said in a Facebook post on May 9.
“’Brotherly congratulations’ on May 9; a strike at the center of Slovyansk; we’re currently assessing the damage,” said Liakh.
The mayor also asked locals to avoid sharing images and footage of Russian shelling.
Unlike the rest of the world, Russia and other post-Soviet countries traditionally celebrate WWII VE Day one day later – on May 9. Russia has continued to attack Ukraine, despite the commemorations of the victory over German fascism.
