Russia has been launching jet-powered
drones from Crimea toward western Ukraine over the past several days, Ukrainian
presidential defense technology adviser Serhii Beskrestnov said on Oct. 13.
Four drones reached Lviv, while others traveled even farther,
about 880 kilometers, reaching Lutsk, according to Beskrestnov. Launched from occupied
Crimea, the drones flew through Odesa region, along Moldova, and then headed
toward western Ukraine.
To cover the distance, Geran-4 UAVs flew at an altitude of 5
to 6 kilometers, with an average speed of 320 to 380 kph, Beskrestnov said.
He said Russia is studying the possibility of attacking
western regions of Ukraine with jet-powered Shahed drones from different
directions. The maximum range of the Geran-4 was slightly greater than
expected, according to the adviser.
Beskrestnov also suggested that Russian forces may have
reduced the drones’ warheads to increase their range. He said that possibility
still needs to be confirmed.
In August, a Russian jet-powered drone launched from
occupied Crimea reached western Ukraine for the first time. Including maneuvers,
the drone’s route was about 850 to 920 kilometers.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
