Ukrainian agents detain woman accused of aiding Russian strikes on military sites

Ukrainian security forces have detained a Russian agent in Khmelnytskyi Oblast who was gathering intelligence to help coordinate strikes against Ukraine’s Defense Forces in the west, the Security Service of Ukraine said on April 21.

Russian forces prioritized Ukrainian airfields and transit depots used to store weapons and ammunition, according to Ukrainian investigators.

Officials say Russian intelligence services remotely recruited a 26-year-old Ukrainian woman with a history of drug addiction. Lured by the promise of easy money via Telegram channels, she allegedly agreed to help coordinate strikes on Ukrainian military targets.

Investigators claim the woman was tasked with conducting surveillance near a military airfield in western Ukraine. She reportedly rented an apartment overlooking a Ukrainian Armed Forces logistics hub using funds provided by Russian operatives.

From there, she allegedly documented the arrival times and maintenance schedules of military equipment.

Authorities say she also monitored the movement of mobile air defense units assigned to protect the facility, relaying the information to Russian handlers. The intelligence was reportedly intended to help Russian forces time a missile strike when the base was at its most vulnerable — during peak equipment and personnel activity—while avoiding Ukrainian air defenses.

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) said it intercepted the plan and arrested the suspect in a safe house. A mobile phone used to communicate with Russian intelligence was seized during the operation.

The woman has been charged with high treason under martial law, which under Ukrainian law can carry a sentence of life in prison. She is currently in custody.
