Russian airports closed due to drone attack
On Dec. 21, several airports in Russia were closed due to
the threat of an attack by strike drones on the Republic of Tatarstan.
According to Russian media, temporary restrictions were
imposed at Kazan Airport.
In addition, the head of the Udmurt Republic stated that a “cover”
plan had been enacted at Izhevsk Airport, and flights were suspended.
Later, temporary restrictions were also placed on Saratov’s
Gagarin Airport. A representative of Rosaviatsiya said the airport was
temporarily not accepting or dispatching flights.
“This is necessary to ensure the safety of civil aircraft
flights,” the statement said.
Explosions were heard in the Republic of Tatarstan on Dec.
21. Local residents reported a drone attack and “air defense operations.”
Russian Telegram channel Astra reported that in Kazan, one drone crashed into
an elite 37-story building. Footage circulating online shows the drone striking
the upper floors of the building, followed by an explosion and a fire.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed that air defense “destroyed”
one drone over the Republic of Tatarstan on the morning of Dec. 21.
