A Russian assault force has landed in the town of Hostomel in Kyiv Oblast in an attempt to capture the local airfield, the adviser to the Interior Ministry, Anton Herashchenko, wrote on Facebook on Feb. 24.

He said three enemy helicopters had been shot down.

Servicemen from the National Guard are fighting enemy sabotage groups who managed to land, he said.

In the early hours of Feb. 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine. Russian troops and armor have crossed the border, supported by artillery fire and air strikes, following numerous cruise missile strikes on military and command-and-control infrastructure all across Ukraine in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Ivano-Frankivsk, Mykolaiv, and other cities.
