Ukrainian air force neutralizes 7 Shahed drones amid Russian assault
Russia attacked Ukraine using Iskander-M ballistic missiles and Shahed-136/131 kamikaze drones, Ukraine's Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk reported on Telegram on Aug. 1.
Ukrainian air defense forces successfully destroyed all seven drones detected by radio engineering units.
The Iskander missiles were launched from Russia's Voronezh Oblast and occupied Crimea, while the Shahed drones originated from Russia's Kursk Oblast and Cape Chauda in Crimea, Oleshchuk said.
The seven Shahed drones were shot down over Kyiv, Poltava, Kherson, and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts.
Kyiv and the oblast issued three air raid alerts overnight. The initial alerts were due to the threat of ballistic missiles, followed by alerts for Russian drones. Explosions were heard in the oblast, and air defense systems were engaged. The attack injured two people, a man and a woman.
The previous Russian attack on July 31 was one of the most significant since the Russian invasion began, marking the largest assault on Kyiv in 2024. Air raid sirens sounded in several regions throughout the night, and explosions were reported in the capital and surrounding areas due to the air defense systems operating.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
