Russian corporate debt hits highest level since 2008 crisis

Overdue accounts receivable in Russia’s
corporate sector have reached their worst level since the 2008-09 global
financial crisis, Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service said
on April 17.
The report said overdue receivables rose 26%, from $79.3 billion to $100 billion, and now account for 10.3% of all corporate accounts receivable.
“Overdue accounts receivable in Russia’s corporate sector have reached their worst level since the 2008-09 global financial crisis,” the statement said.
“The Kremlin is methodically destroying what remains of the business climate in the country.”
“Payment chains are breaking across the whole Russian economy,” the agency added. It said total accounts receivable remained roughly unchanged at $1.6 trillion but called that a “deceptive stability.” Accounts payable reached $650.9 billion, and the share of overdue liabilities rose from 6.9% to 8.2%.
The service also reported that the aggregate financial result of Russian companies fell to $352.1 billion in 2025 — down 4% in nominal terms and nearly 13% after inflation.
“Business has become poorer, but obligations to banks have not decreased,” the agency said.
Small and medium-sized businesses were the most vulnerable, the report said.
“Thirty-one percent of enterprises finished the year with
significant nonpayments by counterparties, primarily state bodies, which is
telling,” it added.
