Sumy drone strike survivors share harrowing stories
Residents of the Ukrainian administrative center of Sumy described to public broadcaster Suspilne the terrifying experience of the devastating Russian drone strike that killed 4 people and injured 9 others on Jan. 30.
"I have a three-room apartment on the 7th floor, and the drone hit the 6th floor. There was a noise, a flash, windows and frames flew, everything flew towards me, I was slightly injured by the glass because I was sleeping and my legs were open," said Mykola Lazarovych, a resident of the building.
Another resident, Matviy Trofimchuk, described the powerful explosions and the fear they instilled in him. "I was very afraid, very afraid," he said.
Hennadiy Vorona, a Red Cross volunteer, spoke about the rescue efforts and the injured.
"The State Emergency Service and our people cleared the area. First they pulled out an old man and a girl. She was injured, had a broken hip and was covered in blood. We took her to the ambulance. There was also a woman, but the floors collapsed, but it is not clear which floor this family was from, and the mother has not yet been found, the rescuers are still sorting it out," he said.
Acting Mayor Artem Kobzar noted that the building completely collapsed at the point of impact.
On Jan. 30, a Russian Shahed drone struck a 10-story apartment building in Sumy, killing four people and injuring nine, including a seven-year-old child.
