Russia launches campaign to force Ukrainians in occupied Kherson Oblast to surrender their passports
Russian forces have initiated a month-long campaign in occupied Kherson Oblast to coerce Ukrainian citizens to surrender their passports, according to General Staff spokesman Andriy Kovalyov on Nov. 7.
“In the Strilkove area of Kherson Oblast, the Russian occupiers have scheduled the so-called 'month of surrender' of Ukrainian passports,” Kovalyov said.
“The occupiers will record Ukrainian citizens surrendering their passports on video to use this footage for propaganda purposes on Russian television.”
Ukraine’s National Resistance Center (NRC) had previously reported that Ukrainian citizens in the occupied territories are being pressured to give up their passports, to little success.
In response, the Russian occupiers are now resorting to threats of deportation for residents who fail to obtain Russian passports by 2024.
The NRC reported on Oct. 13 that Russians in occupied territories are demanding that parents ensure their children accept Russian citizenship, or they could have their children taken from them.
